A dining room table dressed in beautiful linens transforms an ordinary piece of furniture into an inviting and refreshing place to gather together away from the busy noise of the day.

Say ‘goodbye’ to the coffee table in front of the television, and reclaim the dining table starting with the most simple but most important style change; affordable table linens. A dining room table is a testament to the home’s welcoming nature, and so what is your dining room decor saying about your home?

At The House Queen, shoppers are just a few clicks away from finding linen napkins, tablecloths, placemats, chair cushions and more befitting for each season and style preference.  Let’s set the table!

Five Pieces for A Fabulous Dining Table

  1. Linen Tablecloth
  2. Table Runner
  3. Placemats
  4. Linen Napkins
  5. Napkin Rings

Five Extras for Entertaining!

  1. Tea Towels
  2. Host or Hostess Apron
  3. Seasonal Linen Tablecloth
  4. Patio Table Linens for Lunch or Dessert al fresco
  5. Futon Pads and Floor Cushions for a Fun Appetizer Experience

Tips for Table Transformation

TIP 1: Think about your colour palette and the colour use in your sunroom, dining room, kitchen or wherever your table is currently placed.  If you are happy with your wall colour and room theme, then shopping for coordinating linens will be a breeze.  Or, for a bit more fun, start with new linens you love, and transform your room!  Think about everything that brightens up a room: wall colour, an area rug, window curtains, chair cushions, tablecloth, table runner, placemats, and napkins.  That’s a lot of colour!  Colours that don’t coordinate together may appear a little too busy, but a coordinating collection creates gorgeous dining room decor.

Tip 2: Dress is up styles for the season!  A dining room table is one of the most affordable and versatile seasonal statements we can create in our home.  Designing for the seasons is also a fun way to get our kids involved in home decor, and creates a festive environment for entertaining with friends and family.

Tip 3: Consider the table size and shape, condition of the table, your style preference, and the event when setting the table.  Here are some examples:

Small, square table in a small room, dark wood and no imperfections; no event planned: For a small table in a small room and with no event planned, go simple.  Go without the tablecloth and complement the dark beautiful wood with brightly coloured table runner.  Create place settings with placemats and napkins within matching napkin rings.

Moderately sized, rectangular/circular table; nice dinner with family and friends planned: For a nice dinner with family planned, include all of the five essential table components we’ve listed above.  For a really nice dinner party event, we have some formal tablecloth, linen napkin, and placemat options.  For every other event, we have options that fit the season and your personal decor style.

If you need any help or advice along the way, just let us know!

Most importantly, a dining room table is a place for family gathering.  Table linens aren’t all about style; they’re about creating a place of comfort and making family and friends feel important and welcome.

Kitchen Décor with Heart

Warm baked goods cooling on a rack, breathtaking table linens in natural colours, a vintage apron daintily hanging upon a kitchen hook, and a vase of fresh garden flowers rests upon a tablecloth almost seeming to mirror the same floral patterns.  Welcome to the country kitchen!

Country kitchen décor is primarily inspired by a blend of nature with the evolution of French and English design and craftsmanship.  A country kitchen plays on warm and inviting tones in nature combined with kitchen products that resemble our great grandmother’s homemade linens such as aprons, tablecloths, placemats, cloth napkins, and tea towels; simple, inexpensive, authentic elegance.

As the weather gets a little cooler, a warm and inviting sanctuary is the place to be.  Let’s get started together on your country kitchen décor today!

Country kitchen décor entails crisp linens and things like what we offer through our Pure Linen collection such as tablecloths with embroidered Tuscan sunflowers or Tuscan PoppyflowersRapee is an astounding vender of placemat sets, chair cushions and more We have to admit that Pure Linen really takes the cake for country class; their linens seem as if great-grandmother worked there hand embroidering and hand-stitching each product.

Country home décor is also all about the lighting.  If possible, make sure enough natural sunlight is coming into the room.  Consider short valences or two-piece curtain sets for window curtains instead of dark panels.  Simple lines or florals really set the country tone for curtains.  Have a sweet lamp on the kitchen counter for a gentle evening glow.

Another fun aspect to a country kitchen are the unique finds you can add as inexpensive or even free touches such as baskets, small area rugs, vases made from pitchers, cheap throw pillows in a breakfast nook or even heirlooms.  As always, keep all of our suggestions in mind when considering a gift for your girlfriend, coworkers, or that perfect Mother’s Day, birthday or Christmas gifts that you know they’re going to love.

Kitchen décor can be so much fun, because out kitchens are the heart of the home and one of the primary selling points to any house.  Country kitchen décor is one of the most easy and affordable styles to love.

Dress up a bathroom with style and functionality!

Bambury Products

The bathroom is the place in the home where we start our day and end it, and if any room deserved a redecorating treatment, why not the bathroom where you can create a private retreat away from the world to relax and renew?  Whether you enjoy the country cottage look, prefer rustic décor, or are in need of a bathroom kidtopia, creating a new look is easier than you may think.  Shopping online is so much more fun and convenient than the alternative, and don’t we remember the alternative–fighting traffic, wasting gas, and going from store to store for the perfect set of hand towels to match the bath mat, and more often than not, we had to compromise with some questionable face washers that we paid too much for and didn’t match the rest of our collection?

Limit the design elements like bathroom accessories to our online home decor and gifts collection composed of luxury Australian name brands.  Before the coffee is done brewing in the morning, you could have an entire bathroom ensemble picked out and on its way.

Get started with some of our affordable bathroom decorating ideas!

Decide what you want to stay and what needs to go.  If you like the paint colour, tile, and bathroom countertops you already have, all the easier!  Use these colours for your inspiration!  If you do need a bit more of an update, painting and replacing bathroom fixtures such as the lights, towel racks, hand pulls, faucets, and mirror is the easiest and most affordable way to make a quick but dramatic transformation.  Leave the rest up to your bathroom accessories!

Neutral colours and contemporary design is one of the most favoured choices in bathroom design, because this theme promotes a clean, updated, and relaxing feel.  Check out our spa-themed bathroom blog posted already where we go into detail about this colour scheme.  Bambury’s Temple Organic Cotton line of organic cotton face washers, hand towels, bath towels, and bath mats come in a lovely eggshell white, espresso brown, and earthy tan.  By incorporating these

organic neutral coloured-cotton towels into the bathroom, both the relaxing spa-inspired decor and the environment are benefiting from these beautiful accessories.

There are so many shower curtain options by Robert Green Australia to choose from in our home décor collection, and literally hundreds of combinations to accessorize with.  The pecan swirl shower curtain pictured here would look perfect with this exact colour and contemporary spa-style combination!

“The master bedroom is our retreat, not so much from the kids, but with the kids.  We snuggle, read, have pillow fights.  We couldn’t live without a king-size bed”–Jenny Keenan, Better Homes and Gardens, April 2010.

The master bedroom may be a place buzzing with activity for a family with young children.  At some point, Mum and Dad’s bed may become a place for snuggles and story time before bed, cartoons on a Saturday morning before the pancakes are ready, and the place to hide during scary storms.  A bed with so much character should definitely match in comfort.  Crafting a comfortable bed is our speciality, and you are one quick click away from dressing up your bed with soft and luxurious bedding.  You don’t even have to leave your bed!

Let’s Make the Bed!

At The House Queen, we consider ourselves experts in making a bed that you will want to cuddle up in and perhaps think twice about leaving!  The first step in making the bed is to cover your box springs.  Some people prefer simple mattress covers or mattress protectors and others prefer more decorative bed valances or bed skirts.  If you have allergies, you may want to consider a hypoallergenic mattress cover.  A bed skirt or bed valance is a wonderful way to hide unsightly bed hardware, and we have them available in many different styles from modern contemporary to ruffled romantic.  If you don’t have a box spring mattress, just skip ahead to the next step!

Let’s move up to your mattress.  You will want to include a mattress pad.  Mattress toppers are an excellent way to provide extra support for your back, particularly with older mattresses, and protects the mattress from liquids, basic wear and tear, dirt, bacteria and other allergens.  We have several options that you may want to consider for your particular comfort preference, material, warmth level, and health concerns.  Because we specialize in Australian manufactured bed linens, we carry brands such as Logan & Mason who are famous for their woolen underlays among their many other wonderful bedding options, Crestell who produces luxurious mattress underblankets made of wool or cotton among their other many products, and Australian Feather Mills who specializes in down feather underlays. These things will help you have a great night’s sleep!

(On a side note, in our collection of bedding for young children, we have waterproof mattress protectors made by Smart-Dri, a division of Living Textiles, available for the bassinet, cot, or single bed sizes.)

Now’s the time to get creative!  You have sheets, quilts, comforters, duvets, doona covers, decorative pillows, regular pillows, pillow shams, pillow cases, throws and more.  This is up to you!  Your bed is your artistic palette.  There are so many patterns, styles, themes, designs available from sheets to doonas to decorative pillows…we have so many options for you that you may want to give yourself a few choices at home.

The fitted sheet is going to go on first.  Like a shower cap, you want to make sure you have the correct size for your particular bed.  The flat sheet follows, and then continue with your optional bedding including an electric blanket if you so choose, quilt, comforter or bedspread, or a duvet (also known as a doona cover).

Don’t forget your pillows!

Pillow protectors, like the mattress protector, protects your pillow from stains and basic wear and tear.  The pillow with the pillow cover goes inside of your pillow case or pillow sham.

We think that all of these components will create a showroom quality piece with the comfort you and your family deserves during story time!

SHERIDAN BEDDING

Delight the mind and body and inspire the senses…with great design, quality and innovation for everyday luxury (Sheridan)

We have an exciting and highly anticipated announcement to make!  The House Queen has just added the Sheridan bedding collection to our inventory of high quality Australian designer brand collection of bed linens, sheets, quilt covers, duvets and doona covers, and even luxury towels!  With this addition means new designs inspired by modern art, the essence of nature, and the charm of timeless looks.

Adding a new brand name to our collection is by no means an easy feat.  We have searched high and low for only the best materials, the best names in Australian housewares, and the most timeless and trendy looks in today’s decor.  Companies rarely make the cut for any of our collections (from bedding to nurseries to the dining room), but Sheridan stood out as a definite example of high class appeal above the others.

Sheridan says,

The current range of beautiful bed linen, towels and bedding basics from Sheridan reflects a proud creative and innovative heritage spanning over 40 years.

One quality, among many, that we love so much about Sheridan is the versatility of design.  Sheridan has divided their patterns and designs into different categories.

Deluxe Living is a collections of elegant and traditional designs that accompany almost any theme. These designs range from elaborate to simple, but every thing is just breathtakingly gorgeous.

Mode Living is a collection of bedding for the modernists and contemporary lovers.  These designs help define a room for who a person is artistically and creatively.  All of these modern-inspired designs explore texture, colours, pattern and sensibility to give a room a bit of a designer ‘edge’.

Easy Living blends traditional with contemporary for a whole new dimension in bedding design.  These designs were made with mix match versatility in mind, so the interior designer within you can delight yourself with rearranging and restyling your bed with different sheet and pillow case colour combos throughout the year.  Sheridan says that the Easy Living collection is, “arranged in bold, imaginative medleys of pattern, colour and texture.”

Finally, the Junior collection is a fabulous collection of bedding for youth.  Sheridan says, ‘brighten any child’s bedroom with the vivacious colour and pattern of the Junior collection, characterised by whimsical themes, nostalgic motifs and a bright, coordinating colour palette across the range. This easy-care cotton bed linen collection, including charming accessories, is the perfect playground for kids of all ages.”

All four of these categories are intermingled among our entire bedding collection, but we just wanted to introduce what type of styles are represented by Sheridan.

We are so very excited to share Sheridan’s luxury bed linens with you!  This August, you will see the entire bedding collection featured in the monthly specials.  To find Sheridan bedding on our website, just CLICK HERE!

A quilt cover that fits the both of us is an invitation to a place where dreams are shared and comfort is second to none.

We talk often of bedding and the happiness and style it brings to our rooms and ourselves, and we can’t help it.  We as humans spend a great deal of time in bed, and so a bed for two should be especially considered for comfort, quality and romantic factors.

I love to walk into our master bedroom and see a room defined by a beautiful bed with several romantic touches: a gorgeous quilt cover, a quaint bedspread draped at the foot for a colder evening, pillows and cushions in different shapes and sizes in the most silky soft pillow cases, and accent sheets peeking out at the top beneath it all.  It’s a romantic and beckoning place, and I hate to leave it sometimes.

Romantic themes can grace any particular style: traditional, modern-contemporary, country cottage, eclectic, Asian-inspired, beach retreat, and every other.  The romantic-themed bedroom is about blending elegance with casual and relaxed.  It’s about masculine elements with a feminine touch.  The final touch is the bedding:  the duvet or quilt cover, the bedspread, bed skirt or valence if preferred, high thread count sheets, and pillows galore.  Bedding is an easy way to update a room’s entire décor.

Prints, plaids, florals, sheers and solids can all be used (and used in combination) on the bed to create a romantic feel.  One of my favourite romantic looks is a canopy bed enclosed in sheer white curtains creating an exotic and cosy retreat; especially when paired with dark wood tones.  Soothing colours in subtly varying shades create a quiet rhythm.  If you both like blue, various blues in slightly differing shades can be incorporated throughout the room for a soft and relaxing feel.

Echo elements from the bedspread or quilt cover that you love in other elements of the room such as the furniture and accessories.  If you like the elegance of traditional looks, drape valances and curtains in the window, provide soft lighting with a small lap on an end table, and mix match prints with florals all throughout the room.  Any themed room can be given a romantic touch with bouquets of flowers and a few delicately scented candles.

We have so many quilt covers that appeal to the romantic-hearts out there.  To view them, visit the bedding section of our website!

A throw rug is the perfect answer to spruce up a lounge or sofa chair.  That little bit of extra comfort adds both beauty and a touch of warmth to your home.  It’s also one of the easiest and most affordable ways to add your personal style to a room.

Throw rugs can be “thrown” all over the home!  The versatility of having a small and personal source of warmth whenever you need it is marvelous.  Our lounges, sofa chair, bed, and a few other chairs in our home each have their own throw, which is great not only for ourselves when we need it, but for our company as well.  We often give throw rugs as gifts for any occasion: Christmas, birthdays, weddings, graduation, and even baby showers.  They’re perfect!

Throw rugs are just about the easiest way to complement decor with the primary colour or accent colour in a home’s decor.  If red is used as an accent colour throughout your bedroom decor, for example, one solid red throw rug is really going to help accentuate that colour in the room.  A throw rug for each colour in your decor theme will really help brighten your room!

Our throws are made in a variety of styles and fabrics.  Our contemporary embroidered throw rug from Brambury featured above in black is sensational and the Joplin throw rug from Rapee in luxurious acrylic (above right) in the vivid red, blue, tan, and green is a texture and colour delight.  The image to the left is part of the Logan and Mason mohair bedding collection; the softness and texture of this unique throw rug makes this the perfect unique gift for someone.

Rapee is famous particularly for their use of bright and vivid colours and creative design.  One example of creative design is pictured here to the right, Rapee’s Snowgum throw rug collection with matching cushions.  This collection is made with the softest polyester fur and rich suede.   And to see the wonderful colours from Rapee that we described, take a look below at Rapee’s Ripples throw rug (below right), Rapee’s Portobello throw rug collection in fresh harvest colours (below center), and the wild festival of colour and design in the sensational Rapee Masai collection (below left).

Just picture your new throw rugs adding style and grace to your room decor, and the afternoon with a good book, a cup of tea, and a soft and luxurious throw rug across your lap or a movie night with the kids snuggling close underneath throw rugs with bowls of popcorn to the side.   Think of some of the most picturesque moments in a sweet home, and more likely than not, you will see a throw rug or two across a lounge or chair.  Security and beauty.

Refresh Your Bed with Crisp New Sheets

Bed sheets aren’t the bed linens hidden from their glory–they’re the most important aspect of the bedding experience.  They are the soft touch against skin and the breathable layer of warmth that also contribute to the design of your bed and bedroom decor.  Sheets in luxurious Egyptian cotton comfort the soul, sheets in satin are tantalizing to the touch and sheets in linen are the timeless luxury with multiple health benefits.  High quality sheets are the essential component in dressing up a bed.

High quality sheets are something to enjoy for many years.  The intricately woven threads of high thread count sheets are meant to withstand multiple washings and resist piling the way that low thread count sheets do, and this is one reason why we only buy from manufactures that exclusively make luxury, high quality sheets.

Go for a hotel look!

Use Sheets to Create a Serene Motif

One of the biggest appeals in bedroom design right now is to create a hotel-inspired look using sheets, classic or contemporary quilt covers, bedspreads, throw rug, and accent pillows.  Designers use pillows in the same colours or slightly varying tones as the sheets and quilt covers to balance the colour scheme.  The look is irresistibly inviting. We actually carry hotel inspired sheet designs such as the Hotel-Weight Luxury Bed Sheet Sets made by Sheridan.  Pair these sheets with a quilt cover in a fabulous design that fits your personality, a bed skirt, and decorative pillows and cushions, and you can pull off that luxury five-star hotel look in your own bedroom.

There aren’t any differences between cotton sheets, satin sheets and linen sheets as far as quality is concerned, and the choice you make between these fabrics depends on personal preference.

Linen Sheets by Pure Linen

Linen sheets are known for being particularly breathable while still maintaining warmth.  They provide ample heat, but breathe more so than other fabrics allowing them to stay cool as well.  They are also hypoallergenic, extremely durable, and provide a number of health benefits that we have outlined in a previous article posted below.

Cotton, cotton sateen and Egyptian cotton sheets have been the popular standard in bed linens.  Cotton, also very durable and breathable, is extremely soft and easy to care for.  Egyptian cotton sheets, like many of the options we carry, are considered to be the ultimate in luxury, and at one time they were only available in the most exclusive stores at more than $500-600 minimum for a set of sheets.  Now, they are a little more readily available, but still as high in quality and luxury as ever before.

Satin sheets have been described as an experience similar to swimming in chocolate, a girl’s dream, a silky sensation.  Satin sheet sets are so finely smooth that they really do seem to glisten between bed covers.  Satin sheets will be a little more warm than linen or cotton, because of the highly-highly woven threads, which help create that smooth feel, and the experience is truly wonderful.

Some of the brand names that we carry in bed sheet sets include: Sheridan (NEW), Pure Linen Luxury Bedding, Logan & Mason Bedding, Bambury Bedding and Espirit Bedding.

If you need help choosing your next set of sheets, do let us know!  We will help you pick out that perfect set for your style and tastes or help you decide on the perfect sheets for a gift.

Of course, here at the House Queen, we are the source for homewares: home accessories, bed linens, dining room accessories, and nursery decor and bedding, because we love to decorate and we share a passion with others who do as well.  Everyone has their own unique decor style, and so we try to provide a number of designs from modern and contemporary to cottage styles, Asian-inspired accessories, country and more to appeal to each one’s own tastes.  Having a particular style or theme preference makes decorating so much easier; it guides us on colour choices, accessory choices, fabric patterns and furniture designs to name a few.

We thought we would show you five sample styles, and some of our home accessories that would accompany that style perfectly!  This will help you find things for your style or provide gift ideas for others.

Old World (Tuscan, Old English, French Country)

The old world style is influenced by early European design.  We love designs in this category, because they’re timelessly elegant, traditional, easy to work with and enchanting.  Creams and neutrals work well against old stonework, lanterns, and bold and vivid accent colours like red, blues, and greens.  Rooms using the old world style either convey more Tuscan Italian design, French Country looks, or Old English looks, and so the old world theme may be masked under one of these names.  Either way, the looks take us back to simpler times, to castles or to a romantic chateaux far away.

City Chic (Loft, Small Living, Contemporary, Modern Flat)

The small living space in flat living has paved the way for the city-chic design to evolve into a staple look intoday’s decor styles.  Modern contemporary styles are known for sleek appearances and simplistic designs making it ideal for small spaces: no fluff, just cleanliness and artist-inspired detailing.  Smaller and more sleek furniture pieces have made homewares the essential source for colour and flamboyant design, and of course, that’s why we love it so much.  Where furniture has been toned down, colour and style has been toned up.  Anything modern and artistic is celebrated in the city chic design.

City Chic-Inspired Homewares:

Cushions, Pillows, Throw Rugs, Tablecloths, Linen Placemats: Just click on one!

Country Comfort (Country Cottage, Cottage Chic, Romantic)

The country look is graced by florals, prints and plaids working together, eclectic beauty that somehow seems to work together in tandem.  Also known as country cottage or cottage chic in the interior decorating world, this look is altogether feminine and as quaint as wondrous decor can be.  Cottage designs are inspired by a simpler time when comfort and togetherness were staples in a home.  Cottage designs do seem to favour white as a dominate colour, because white is always a symbol of cleanliness and simplicity, and then outside of white, it’s colour central!  Some more French cottage themes that are particularly popular will use more blues and more English-inspired cottage themes use more creams and yellows.

Shower Curtains: such a dramatic piece, such a statement, so beautiful!

In a bathroom, the shower curtain is the big trend setter, the style dictator, and an area of bathroom decor to be truly personal.  Each shower curtain, even the plain white sheer curtain, says something about your tastes and style.  What’s your style?  Do you like bold and funky prints, patterned lines in multiple colours, florals or do textured whites suite your decor the best?  Robert Green, one of the world’s leading designers in shower curtains, has your look no matter what that is!

Bathroom decor can come in many different styles, but we will limit this discussion to three primary themes: traditional, modern-contemporary, and the child’s bathroom.  These themes generally split into more specific styles out there in the home decorating world.

The contemporary themes are currently the more popular over traditional designs, since more and more people are remodeling their bathrooms with the newest looks.  These bathrooms use clean lines, simple decor, and sleek and artistic inspired colours and designs.  The classic white shower curtain with very sleek shower curtain rings as pictured to the left will always look beautiful.  The white shower curtain is timeless.  To aid the modern-ness the rest of the bathroom has, look for unique textures such as the Robert Green Waffle Weave and Satin Stripe white shower curtains.  However, since artistry and unique patterns are also noteworthy in the contemporary style, we’ve posted some pics of a few of our Robert Green shower curtains that would also look great.  To view them all, click HERE.

Traditional designs, as pictured at the very top of this blog post, are about preserving timeless elegance.  This is where vintage and classic designs make their debut.  Traditional bathroom decor doesn’t have to be over-the-top or outdated, but they do exhibit some of the best of man’s designs and artistic ideas across the centuries.  Of course, like always, a plain white shower curtain would look amazing, and will keep the viewers eye’s focused on other elements of the bathroom like vintage tiling, an old pedestal sink, or an antique clawfoot tub.  We’ve posted some shower curtains from Robert Green that may fit this theme below!

Finally, the children’s bathroom is where creativity can really become a fun experience.  Children’s bathrooms can be exciting and enchanting, and a great place to get the kids involved in home decor!  We have posted a great post on decorating the children’s bathroom HERE.  In the children’s bathroom, inspiration can start with the shower curtain!  We’ve posted some shower curtains from Robert Green that may fit this theme below!

Rapee, the spotlight in our July specials, turns humble flea market finds into fabulous style pieces:

Everyone has a bit of flair for creativity, and with cheap flea market, yard sale, and thrift store patio furniture finds, that creativity can lead to extraordinary places.  Furniture doesn’t have to be new to get an upscale makeover; especially when Rapee cushions could make all the difference.  Toss these pillows on your updated patio chairs and benches when company is over or when family gathers for a picnic, and bring them indoors to enjoy every other moment.  We’re here to give you some great ideas!

Who is Rapee?

Rapee, an Australian company, is a designer and manufacturer of cushions, throws, pillows, seat cushions, and linens in exceptional colours and designs.  Rapee has engineered fabric colours to appear more vivid than most other manufacturers can create, and it shows.  Since colour is an essential component to every decorating style, Rapee is a decorator’s dream come true.

Vintage Style Lovers

For decorators into the classic vintage styles, especially styles from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, look out for metal frame outdoor furniture popular in the older decades.  We’ve already seen an amazing comeback of these classic vintage designs today.  A can of paint in light green, red, white, cream, yellows or black would look wonderful paired with our cushion suggestions.

For Example:

Old vintage metal chairs with a fresh coat of spray paint pairs well with Rapee’s colourful, vintage-inspired designs.

Country Cottage Style Lovers

For those who love that warm and comforting look of the country cottage style, keep your eye out for wicker furniture that just needs a new coat of spray paint.  Antique wicker furniture is especially charming in sun rooms and on porches.  The country style demands things with a comforting touch, so you will definitely want to take a look at our throw rugs, cushions, and pillows from Rapee.  We love the country style ourselves, and have so many options for you.

For Example:

Modern Style Lovers

What’s not to love in the brilliantly artistic styles of contemporary modern decor?  Contemporary decorating is about simplicity, clean lines, bold colours and patterns, wide array of material use and creative design that delights our artistic fancy.  Modern styles work in many settings, and we may especially see this decor used in garden patios or an outdoor artistic landscape-wonderland. Since many modern pieces are often characterised by sharp lines, use fabric textures, colours and patterns from Rapee’s cushions to help soften the appearance.

Here’s what you will notice.  Colourful high thread count sheet sets, colourful towels, colourful bath mats, and colourful quilt covers in extraordinary patterns and designs.  Do you notice a theme here?  That’s right!  Espirit is about COLOUR!  Bright colours are a trademark of products manufactured by Australian Weaving Mills.  I bet you are dyeing to know how they manage to produce such fantastic candy hues.  Was that not funny? Dyeing?  In reality, Australian Weaving Mills has engineered colour with scientific craftsmanship to be as vivid in the material as it is.  We made reference to this in one of this month’s press releases.

“We love colour, and are leaders in our ability to move into new shades,” states Australian Weaving Mills.  “Our modern weaving facility enables us to weave luxurious solid coloured towels, jacquard border towels, or all over textured towels.”  In their mission, Australian Weaving Mills explain that they desire to bring fashion into the home where “creativity and innovation is combined with the highest levels of quality”.

Our company’s decision to carry Espirit was not only based in the products’ stylish appeal that instantly pulls in the eye to any bedroom or bathroom design, but because Australian Weaving Mills has become a trusted name in high quality, well-made products for the everyday lifestyle.  Face it, our bedroom decor and bathroom decor is rarely imaged after an art museum piece, but as a welcome-home, kick-up-your-heels, and take-it-easy place of renewal.

Across the oceans, Espirit’s bedding collection from the quilt covers to the sheet sets has been highly sought after particularly by young adults.  Young decorators are motivated to claim the contemporary colours and styles into their own classy modern bedroom themes.

One factor that we know our readers may want to claim for themselves…

Your table linens should make a statement of your personal style!

Table Linen Set from Damask Collection by Pure lInen

Bring a refreshing and exciting feeling into your indoor or outdoor dining area with a table set to lure loved ones together.  A dining area, and especially a combined living and dining room is the hub of all activity.  An outdoor patio table brings us one with nature.  Any table, be it a formal dining room table to an outdoor patio table should be dressed up with table linens that fit your personal style.

What purpose do you want this table to serve?  Will you be having an elegant dinner or a light lunch with the children?  Here are some other things you may want to consider when deciding on what table linens look best: what is the current season (we have patterns that reflect certain seasons), your favourite colour and the accent colours that will coordinate best, the overall decor theme in your dining room, indoor or outdoor setting, do you prefer modern/contemporary or traditional/elegant, and the type of table linen accessories that you would like to include?  All of these things will help you narrow down your many options.

Let’s Set the Table!

Will you want to use a tablecloth?

Tablecloths are optional and some of the more contemporary styles are going without them, but a tablecloth does protect the table and creates a more warm, formal, and inviting feeling.  A tablecloth says this meal we have come together for is important and you will find that your tablecloth options today don’t need to be overly formal (unless you need a very formal option, which we also have).  We do have many contemporary chic options for any table size.  An outdoor table almost certainly needs a tablecloth.  Outdoor patio tables do go through weather’s elements, and a tablecloth adds charm and sophistication to an otherwise less-than-perfect patio table.

Add a Table Runner and Place mats

The table runner and place mats on your dining room table can easily be the artistic statement or theme setter for your table.  If you choose to go without a tablecloth, place mats are a must to protect your table.  Adding these special table linens can really make a dramatic statement to your table, and many of Pure Linen’s table linens that we carry were actually inspired from some of nature’s most beautiful images.  Just take a look!

Napkins and Accessories

Some of the final table linen features you will want to consider are table linen accessories such as your linen napkins and napkin rings, linen tea towels, coordinating host or hostess apron, and seat cushions (or chair pads).  Like any table linen coordinates that we carry, we have options suitable for indoor or outdoors.  Linen napkins and tea towels have quickly grown in popularity as the world is becoming more aware of the negative environmental impact caused by paper napkins and tablecloths.  We also want to point out that more health studies have shown that linen offers many health benefits and should be incorporated in every room from sheets and pillows to linen napkins and place mats (anywhere that touches skin).  Interior decorators are calling this THE REVOLUTION OF LINEN! Take this except from one of our previous feature articles:

We have touched on how linen is a very durable fabric, but we have to add that one benefit of this strength is that the fabric is resistant from dirt and bacteria.  Pure linen naturally suppresses pathogenic microflora, fungi, and bacteria…Another benefit that will definitely keep dinner guests happy as they sit around linen tablecloths, linen table runners, linen placemats, linen napkins, linen tea towels, and you in a linen apron is the inability of static electricity to build up on the threads.  Linen has even been said to be beneficial to the cardio vascular, muscular, and nervous systems.  Additionally, the breaks in the microscopic composition of the fibres create a naturally massaging effect increasing blood-flow and inducing relaxation.

Finish off the look with a beautiful centerpiece!

Tablecloth, placemats, runners, linen napkins, and accessories; all you need now is your centerpiece!  Get creative with your centerpiece.  Reflect your room’s theme, the current season, and maybe even bring a bit of nature to the table with fresh cut wildflowers.

Cot Sets and Nursery Sets by Living Textiles

As you can see, each collection has a beautiful cot set that any mother or mother-to-be would absolutely long to have in their nursery, and you may wonder what constitutes a cot set before you get ready to shop.  We carry both cot bedding and bassinet bedding.  A bassinet or Moses bed is the small cradle-type bed normally portable to be kept in any room near a parent.  We do have bassinet bedding sets, specific to these unique beds.

Cots, also known as cribs, are much larger, less portable, and have a full sized cot mattress that our cot bedding specifically fits.  Our cot sets do come in three piece to six piece sets, and we also have many coordinating pieces such as pram waffle blankets, cot valances, cot bumpers, plush cot blankets, cot quilts, and more.  These sets are designed to grow with an infant.  Light blankets with little to no plushness are intended to protect infants from SIDS, since there is little risk of suffocation.  We have listed an article at the end of this post to recommend certain types of bedding for newborns.  Safety and style definitely go hand in hand.

Choose the right bedding that brings out the best in style and comfort in your bedroom.

My clients want bedrooms that are as serene as possible with a retreat-like atmosphere…Colours must be soothing and well blended. Light purples, creams and soft greens are very popular. People are spending more time at home and definitely want comfort–Eileen Gould, Designer for Better Homes and Gardens

High thread count sheets, plush down pillows, down quilt covers, and breathtaking duvet comforters seem to cry out promises of pampering to our tired bodies.  Beautiful bedding sets the mood, tone, and style for the perfect dream bedroom--the bed is, after all, the heart of the room.  Choosing the right bedding from coverlets and quilts to sheets and shams in your personal style is easy to do online at The House Queen.  Our mission is to inspire your inner-interior decorator, and so we thought we would offer just a couple bedding ideas and tips!

Set the “Feel” of your Room with Your Duvet or Bedspread Choice

What is your favourite style?  If you like the white bedding collection featured at the top of this post, the Logan & Mason Dominique White Bedding Collection, you may favour contemporary styles. We also feature bedding sets that are more specifically country cottage, Asian inspired, youthful-colourful, classic elegant, romantic, traditional, wild animal print, and so many other themes. Once you find a bedding set you like, consider accent colours that complement both the theme and the dominant colour.

Going back to the picture up at the top, for example, see how the rest of the bedding from sheets to pillow shams are white to keep a clean uniform theme, which pops against the modern grey and espresso brown furnishings?  The bedroom accessories are also white making this bedroom have only three primary colours.  Minimal colour choices is very characteristic of contemporary themes, because the room will appear more visually calming and uniform than eclectic styles.

Add Luxury with Pillows!

One thing we LOVE at The House Queen are decorative pillows and cushions.  These affordable little gems add so much style to an entire room.  Decorative pillows enhance bedding with complementing patterns and colours.  ”Pillowscaping” is a term that many interior decorators use to describe pillow arranging, and YES, it is so much fun.  If you like your current bedding set, but feel that you still need some oomph, decorative pillows and cushions are the way to go!

Change Bedding for the Season

Most of us redecorate for each season, so why not our redecorate our beds?  Layering bedding for the seasons is something we all do to adjust to new temperatures, but also think about changing into a fresh new duvet of a different style, and you will have a nice change to look forward to throughout the year.

Use Bold and Contrasting Colours for A Youthful Look

Our Espirit Bedding Collection must be one of our favourites for youthful rooms, because the bright and bold colours featured in this collection can hardly be described.  Espirit, like our other manufactures is based here in Australia, and specializes in the production of vivid colours.  Unique, contemporary patterns is very characteristic of Espirit’s duvets, and no doubt any of these duvets and bedding sets will set the style in bedroom decor.  If you like the bedding by Espirit, you will definitely want to check out their bathroom accessories found in our bathroom collections.

Logan & Mason

Logan & Mason, also an Australian manufacturer, produces many of our breathtaking bedding sets.  The reason that we so strongly suggest our bedding sets by Logan & Mason, Espirit, Downia, and our others is because we know that quality and comfort will never be compromised.  We took great pains to find manufacturers that could produce VERY stylish looks for an affordable price that you can enjoy for many many years.  Most others can’t say the same about their bedding.

What is shabby chic?  Well, to start with, it’s a little bit elegant, but a little bit rustic and comforting—a little bit pastel and floral, but is definitely not your grandmother’s room.  Shabby chic is normally associated with cottage style, and is primarily characterized by romantic themes and total sophistication.

If you need a little inspiration for this décor style, we are here to help from the smallest accessories to the largest.  Bedroom décor accessories include all of your bed linens from your quilt covers to duvets, sheets, pillows, pillow shams and pillowcases, sheet sets, and throws, your wall décor including paint colour and wall accessories, and other shabby chic room accessories such as fresh or silk flowers, candles, and your bedroom furniture.

To start decorating with shabby chic design, consider the elements to a basic bedroom that you will need, and how we are going to transform these things.

Let’s start with the room colour.  If you want to repaint a bedroom, consider a colour that will not only accompany this theme, but a theme in the near future once you leave for college or change your mind on style.  Any white, neutral, or pastel will work just fine.  If you want to stray from white, beige or tan, a pastel blue, pink, or green will be perfect to accompany similar-coloured shabby chic accessories.

Moving on to the bed, the first reaction you will have when you walk into your room will be towards your bedding choice.  Logan & Mason has created an outstanding bedding collection that will be perfect for this theme!  The first picture in this blog includes one of these collections, and we have listed a couple more below.

One element to this bedroom theme that you will want to accentuate is the feeling of comfort, and so having plenty of pillows on the bed is essential. Now, pull the colours from your comforter, quilt cover, or duvet to use throughout the rest of the room.

Bedroom furniture is another major way to convey the shabby chic theme WITHOUT spending a lot of money!  Considering that you may already have a chest of drawers, bookcase, dresser, ect that you can still use, give these things a facelift with a nice coat of white paint.  White is often used as an accent colour in shabby chic design, because it updates furniture with a consistent clean look that allows the wall decor, bed linens, and bedroom accessories stand out even more.  Beds themselves, on the other hand, can follow suit with a fresh coat of white paint or feature unique, artsy designs such as an antique wrought iron headboard and footboard.

Another decorating idea that you may want to consider regarding bedroom furnishings is a small to medium sofa chair with a vintage-cottage style slip cover.  Embellish the slipcover by having your monogram embroidered into the fabric, so that your chair really emits your personal style!  Right now, you can just about monogram anything from your pillow cases to accent pillows and slip covers, and it will be considered in style.

Considering wall decor, old photographs in sepia or vintage floral prints such the cover of an old 1930s-1940s seed catalog framed in with matching frames either hung normally or daintily hung from a wide silk ribbon will polish off this look.

Remember to focus on light in the room, since brightness is a key element to the shabby chic theme.  Light coloured window curtains and a lamp or two with a white shade or theme-approapriate design will do wonderfully.  Fresh or silk hydrangeas or wild flowers in subtle but artsy vases and a small arrangement of books or candles on tabletops will finish off the makeover completely.

Dress up your bed with artistic style!

Ok, there are artistic beds that should belong in a museum (and do)

And there are REAL beds for REAL lifestyles with artistic flair that you can create yourself when buying bed linens online~

Thank God we’re living in a country where the sky’s the limit, the stores are open late and you can shop in bed…–Joan Rivers

A bed is the focal point in any bedroom, and bed linens are the easiest, most versatile target of creativity.  With all the options available in bed linens Australia, you can easily create your own boudoir “work of art” that has as much unique style as it has beckoning comfort.

Create a great first impression with affordable bedding.  If you currently feel as though your bed appears dorm room eclectic, mismatched, cluttered, or lacking in “something”, we have some ideas that may be just the solution!  You might find that we write dozens of blog articles on bedding, but how can one not be passionate about the subject.  The possibilities of bed linen coordinates and bedroom décor are endless!

Add Some Colour

Give your bedroom some colour with fantastically designed duvet covers.  Crisp fabrics like your pillow cases in bright colour choices will bring dramatic expression to your bed. Since we are talking “artistry” here, think about what colour does to our senses and emotions.  Cool colours will help the mind relax and create a dreamy look.  Hot reds, vibrant oranges, and pop-out patterns are both romantic and alive in visual sensations.

Spreading the Colour and Style Around the Room

Any colour or pattern in your bedspread can be used to inspire the rest of your bedroom decor.  No doubt the bed is the centerpiece of your bedroom, and any color combo can be taken from the duvet and replicated around the room whether it be in the curtains, candles, wall decor, floor rugs, throws, and even upholstery.  You definitely want the bed accessories themselves like pillows, cushions, quilts, and sheets to match.  Consistency in colours (eliminating colours that aren’t consistent with your colour palette) will help your room look larger and more congruent with one theme rather than unorganized and cluttered.

Play it up with Patterns

Chic, dramatic patterns are what we LOVE about the Espirit, Pure Linen, and Logan & Mason bedding collections.  Patterns designed using wonderful colours really convey the artistry appeal that we are speaking of.  In your choice of duvet or doona cover patterns, your room suddenly makes a statement declaring a unique style or theme.  Are you modern-contemporary, enjoy Asian-inspired designs or romantic, ruffled country rustic?  When you have Australian brands like Espirit and Logan & Mason, you know your style preference is in good hands.

Open and Airy or Small and Quaint

All interior decorators will tell you that every detail even down to your bedding will create a sense of ‘size’ in a room be it big or small.  Typically smaller rooms will use bedding that doesn’t make a room “feel” small, and factors that contribute to a room feeling small are very plush duvet covers with a dozen too many pillows on top.  If you have a large space to fill, this would work perfectly; however a small room will need to downsize in accessories.  A contemporary-themed duvet with clean sleek lines and understated patterns  with only a couple of decorative pillows will help make the bed look incredibly stylish yet downsized visually helping you to make the room look as large as possible.

Decorating for our babies with the beauty of our natural surroundings:

When it comes to nursery decor for our baby girls, we may be too quickly inspired to stick pinks against pinks with no nursery accent colour other than one shade of pink against the other.  Why not create a whimsical nursery inspired by the beauty of nature?  Mint green is an understated green that can be used everywhere from the walls to an accent colour in pink bedding that brings a refreshing sense of nature into a nursery.  Right now, interior decorators have been favouring this classic colour combo that is destined to remain timeless in interior design.

Some of us are just a bit weary of incorporating strong green tones into home decorating.  We can still see signs of avocado greens in refrigerators and bathroom countertops that haunt us from a bygone era; however, a refreshing crisp mint green, several shades brighter and lighter than the 1960s-70s green provides the most understated natural beauty when paired with garden roses in a nursery setting.

The Bella Butterfly and Secret Garden collections by Australia’s leading nursery linens company, Living Textiles, combines floral pinks with light refreshing greens.  These colours are paired together in the cot bedding, window curtains and valences, pillows and nursery cushions, character wall plaques, wall stickers, quilts, cot sheets, and so much more.  For example, here is a sample cot bumper and cot bedding set from the Secret Garden collection.

Wall colour is a great way to introduce light green hues into the room.  Unlike pink that is specifically characteristic of nursery decorating, light green can grow with a child and even work when a room must be shared with a little boy. Bold greens may be a little too overbearing, but a light refreshing green will maintain the feminine feel.  Here are some shade samples:

Add some whimsey with a gorgeous little chandelier, a lamp with a pastel pink or floral shade to provide a comforting night light, and wall decor to bring enchantment from the outdoors in.  The curtains featured in the Bella Butterfly and Secret Garden collections are both perfect for this style.  Living Textiles provides all of the nursery accessories and cot bedding needed to finish the style.

There are several crafty ways you can easily incorporate this delightful colour scheme into your nursery decor without breaking the bank.  For example, a white, pink or natural wood bookcase could be lined in the back behind the shelves with green and pink-patternered wallpaper.  Large white bows can provide a crisp neutral colour to the cot and backs of chairs.

A little girl would be fortunate to grow up in room decor so beautiful.  With this nursery, your daughter will have a place to treasure for years before outgrowing her nursery theme.
