For my three children I used the sleeping bags or grow suits so that I didn’t have to worry about suffocation.
If it was hot I still put them in with the fan on and if it was cold I could put their pyjamas on underneath.
The sleeping bags and grow suits to tend to make them stay laying down once they start to get a little more active as they can’t run around the cot of try to climb out as easily.

Life after stations by Katrina Foulkes-Taylor
In June 2005 we made the heart wrenching decision to leave our home at Twin Peaks Station. We decided for the benefit of our children and their education that we would make a change. Like many in the bush at the moment, we had gone a long long time without adequate rainfall. Together we had worked so very hard physically and mentally we were exhausted. We just got sick of waiting for rain and knew that we weren’t prepared to gamble away another couple of years waiting for it. We were fortunate to sell the station quickly and we headed for Carnarvon where we purchased a small business.

We made the decision to go into small business because at the time we were of the opinion that working for somebody else after being “your own boss” for so long would come with a few issues. We were fortunate that we had the administration and machinery skills and could work really long hours. Somehow at the start we bluffed our way through. It was quite scary stepping out of our comfort zone and before we left the station Robbie had said many times “but what can I do, I am a station bloke?” He soon learnt that he had so many skills that really he could be good at anything he put his mind to.
This decision did actually work in our favor and we have learnt that whilst living on a station there is a lot to living in urban areas that we did not know. There is a lot that our urban counterparts take for granted and a lot that they probably have never even thought about. We found that there is so much that happens in rural areas that town folk really can be very insular in their manner as they whine about the heat in Geraldton or ask where is Mullewa!!
We were offered a price for our business in Carnarvon that we couldn’t refuse so in 1997 our family moved back to Geraldton. Now feeling like gypsies Robbie went to work for Patience Bulk Haulage. The choice to go and work for somebody else is not, as we thought, always a bad idea. It really does work in your favor especially if you are considering starting up or buying a business in the future. One thing town people do is talk a lot and just being around to look and learn has tremendous benefits. It is highly beneficial for you to take the back seat and not be totally responsible for a change. Coming from station life you need time to adjust to your new environment and getting a pay slip every fortnight is not all that bad.
The downside of going off to work for somebody else is that you have to live by the clock and that is something that we really miss about the station. You always have to be somewhere at a certain time and spending time with the family is now a precious commodity that your cherish every weekend. You no longer have sole influence over the upbringing and education of your children as they go off to school. They constantly come home with some foreign behavior that needs to be educated back out of them and the poor children have to cope with most town children who get more enjoyment out of computer games than throwing rocks into puddles and getting dusty.

We have both learnt and grown so much since leaving the station. I personally feel like a chameleon since leaving South Australia where I worked for Local Government sitting on my bottom at a desk, to working like a bloke on the station, then building up a Concrete, Sands and Garden Supplies business to Geraldton where I have started an internet business selling home décor online. We love Geraldton and here I sit again at my computer wondering tongue in cheek how the bugs and heat are going in the Murchison and what time the sea breeze will arrive here in town as surely we have got to 30 degrees today.
I am glad for our time since leaving the station country and we realise now that we need to have substantial investments behind us before we will be heading back to the bush where we are truly at home.
